Pre-college summer programs are an exciting and educational way for students to get a taste of college life while they are still enrolled in high school. Rising sophomore students from Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark had the opportunity to participate in one such program this summer, Bloomfield College’s 2016 10th Grade Summer Program. The program provided students with a head start on their college journey and ran three days a week from August 9 through August 18.

The 10th Grade Summer Program provided the students with the opportunity to participate in project-based math sessions, as well as improve their academic writing skills. The program, which was led by Bloomfield College professors, increased the students’ knowledge of time management skills, healthy study habits, and stress reduction techniques. Guest speakers for the program included Bloomfield College representatives from Financial Aid and Career Development.

“The Eagle Academy students will also be participating in PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) test prep here on campus once a month throughout the school year,” added Dr. Tresmaine Grimes, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. “We hope to continue to strengthen our relationship with them over the next three years and have them enroll at Bloomfield College upon graduation from high school.”

The program, which was free to students, was funded through a grant from the Predominantly Black Institutions Competitive Grant
