                                                                                    Summer Reading Assignment

Dear Eagle Parents and Guardians,
The brain is a muscle that needs to be exercised constantly.  It is crucial for your son to read during the summer months to maintain and extend his independent reading level.  This will keep his brain in shape.   Research validates that students who do not read during the summer months make it difficult for students to keep up with grade level reading expectations.  The district selected books are eBooks and can be purchased at a bookstore like Barnes and Noble or online from Amazon.com or Thriftbooks.com.  Scholars should complete the task for their rising grade level. For example, students in grade 5 in June 2020 would complete Gr. 6 assignment; students in grade 8 in June 2020 would complete Gr. 9 assignment, etc.
  • Students are required to read the book and complete the 3 reading tasks.
  • The reading tasks are due the first day of school, September 8, 2020.
  • At minimum, this reading assignment will constitute 4 -  Marking Period 1 grades.
  • Failure to complete the assignment will result in a grade of “0” for the project.

STUDENTS MUST:
  1. Read the novel-In addition to purchasing a hard copy of the book themselves, students can go directly to the Summer Reading List web page linked off our Newark Board of Education homepage and click “Access Sora eBooks” or select their grade level from the Student Clever Portal. Once in Sora, students click “borrow” and can begin reading their eBook immediately.
  2. Complete the 3 tasks- Access the Summer Reading tasks via Google Classroom which is titled "2020 EAN Summer Reading"- classroom.google.com/u/1/c/MTEyNjg3MzM2NzU0. Additionally, the Google Classroom code is (luydy6o)
  3. Present a formal presentation (in school)
  4. Take an assessment
Our Eagle Scholars have been resilient throughout this unprecedented pandemic.  Advance thanks to you for ensuring that your son feeds his mind and completes these tasks.   Next year will be a great and productive new school year!  Wishing you a safe and healthy summer!  Please feel free to contact the main office with any questions.  It has been my esteemed pleasure to work with you and your sons these last 4 years.

God Bless,
Dr. Sheryl Sewell

Eagle Scholars Chosen to Participate in Nike Black History Month Campaign

View this post on Instagram

Newark’s own @islandboy.khi & @island11boy.muh put effort into everything they do, on and off the court. These young men adopted a crosstown elementary school and worked to bring sport and mentorship to these kids, in addition to providing a safe place to play. Defining their paths like @kyrieirving, young leaders like Mekhi & Muhammed challenge us all to step our game up. Know of an up and coming leader in your community? Nominate them for the Nike Future Varsity Program: www.Nike.com/untilweallwin #untilweallwin #bhm

Eagle Academy Students Recite 'Invictus' at Democratic National Convention

Story by Karen Fratti - Tuesday night's Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia was just about to get a bit boring, until the Eagle Academy students recited "Invictus"and brought everyone back to life. The Eagle Academy is a consortium of all-male secondary schools that started in the Bronx, in New York City, and has five locations in the city and across the river, in Newark, New Jersey. Every day, they recite "Invictus," a poem by William Ernest Henley, that was also made famous by Nelson Mandela. Read More
